Hi Friends,

I’ve just come across a wonderul quote from HopeNotHate:
“If you have more than you need, build a longer table not a higher fence”!

This certainly what we are trying to do at Manchester City of Sanctuary.
Charity, her sister and Zhila created an amazing meal that fed over 80 people on Sunday.
We saw a Youtube clip from Nick Vutick, an amazing hope inspiring Australian who was encoraging us never to give up. We made and flew paper airplanes with messages of our hopes for this year.
New friends and supporters came to join in and new asylum seekers found their wayto our door.
We certainly have an extended table!
Our next Conversation Club is on Thursday 11th February 6-8pm at Transformation Community Resource Centre, looking at HateCrime Awareness and the equality legislation designed to protect us from racism and injustice.
Our local PCSO’s will be joining us to help new arrivals understand the role of the police in the UK.
The next Community Meal is 21st February 1-3pm, joining in the 11th Anniversary Celebrations of Commandprayer Church. Do join us!

Greetings from Jane, Dianne, Charles, Jila, Anita, Mayam, David, Fay & Jeff

Manchester City of Sanctuary helps schools to raise awareness of the needs of sanctuary seekers amongst the children. Children understand justice and they understand friendship.
They can be great frineds to families who are new to this country, who have been forced to flee their homeland.
If you are a teacher, T.A. or headteacher and want to ensure your school community knows how to make them welcome then please check out our Schools of Sanctuary page on our website :
www . cityofsanctuary . org/schoolsofsanctuary or see the video attached to this bulletin.

5. Shopping Buddy – Opportunities every week to help Asylum Seekers

Shopping Buddy Scheme

Thank you to Sam, Katie, Elizabeth and Ruth who have joined our Shopping Buddy Scheme.
The families are so grateful for your help.
During February we will be evaluating the scheme before hopefully opening it to more people.
All your comments and suggestions will be welcome.
The new Shopping Buddy Scheme pairs up local people, who shop in the major supermarkets, with Asylum Seekers, who have Section4 support from the Home Office of £35.28, on an Azure Card,  and so therefore have no access to cash.
It is very difficult to live cashless, especially with children.
It is easier to make such a small sum go further if you can use cash to shop in charity shops, markets, cheap supermarkets and buy a bus ticket.
So far 4 people have successfully shopped together with a Sanctuary Seeker to exchange their shopping for cash.
Lovely friendships are emerging and each person has been touched and challenged by the experience.

If you would like to be a Shopping Buddy please email[email protected]

We have 12 tickets for each play at the Royal Exchange this year, thanks to Tracie and Catherine from the Communities Programme.

If you know of a refugee or sanctuary seeker who would benefit from this opportunity
please put them in contact with Jane or Jila.

Charlotte, from Manchester2calais, a local photographer and campaigner for Asylum Seekers’ Rights,

We have come to know them in City of Sanctuary. They are more than statistics. They are our now our friends.

The money raised from selling these cards for £1 in the Northern Quarter cafes is all used to support Asylum Seekers. They will be available at Conversation Clubs.

Charlotte is looking for 6 more people to be involved in the project. Your face does not have to be shown.
