City of Sanctuary’s next Big Conversation event will take place on Sunday 27th January at Whitworth Art Gallery’s Great Hall.
Join us for a day of friendship, fun and of course – delicious food!
Food is one of those rare things that can bring people together from all walks of life. Food also generates many opportunities and can transform communities and the livelihoods of individuals.
For this event, City of Sanctuary is working with 4Lunch, a social enterprise which delivers cookery courses and training, to support a group of our asylum seekers to design and prepare a catering menu for our guests.
Asylum seekers are not allowed to claim benefits or work in the UK, which leaves many people living in poverty, despite having many skills to offer. Many of the people City of Sanctuary work with are talented home cooks, so we’re incredibly excited to showcase their family recipes and food traditions.
With the help of 4Lunch, the group will be trained in mass food preparation, designing menus and food hygiene, with the aim to enable them to cater future events independently.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event on 27th January, whatever your language and status, for a time of fun and friendship.
Thank you to the University of Manchester, Levenshulme Inspire Centre and Whitworth Art Gallery for allowing us to use their spaces for this project.
